Take a virtual tour to find out how a Writers Online Workshop class works. The following demonstration provides a snapshot of the various workshop components. You may use the scroll bars to move through the text windows, but keep in mind that the links aren't live, as they would be in an actual workshop class.
You'll experience the three main “Go To Class” components:
Lecture Hall
Log on to Lecture Hall at the beginning of each session (you will automatically arrive at the current session's Lecture Hall):
- Professional instruction on session topics, posted at the beginning of each workshop for review/preview at your convenience
- Your send-in assignments, which you complete offline
- Creativity exercises to help you put your new writing skills to use right away
- Supplementary materials with genre-specific instruction and other valuable writing tips and resources
- In the current session, a discussion area where you can ask questions about the session topic, your assignments, or writing in general
Personal Notebook
When your assignment is due (about midway through each session), log on to the Personal Notebook:
- Your personal workspace that only you and your instructor see
- Compose your writing assignments offline using any word processing program or text editor
- "Copy" and "paste" to submit your assignment online and get personal, private feedback from your instructor during each session
- Notebooks from previous sessions are archived, so you can always review your work and your instructor's feedback
Critics' Corner
In the second half of each session, after assignments have been submitted, check out Critics' Corner:
- Assignments will be posted herewith your permission of courseso you can get feedback from other workshop participants
- Participate in a group critique of your classmates' work
- Brainstorm ideas and discuss creative solutions with your peers
